For over 400 years, the Citadelle has crowned the city. A defensive element of the most important port between Antibes and Toulon for centuries, today it is one of the few monuments of this scale on the Var coast.

Originally, its slopes formed a “glacis” devoid of all vegetation, from which enemy vessels approaching too close to the city walls could be “cannoned”.

The town of Saint-Tropez and the French government are restoring the citadel to ensure its preservation and to make it even more welcoming. The dungeon, which is currently being renovated, is closed to the public.

A museum of Tropezian maritime history and a naval museum are planned for the citadel in 2012 and 2013.
